food for thought.

 ( via )

"This is Richard Hayne, President and CEO of Urban Outfitters. He’s also a supporter of Rick Santorum and donated over $13,000 to him. He’s against gay marriage and abortion.

His company pulled a pro-gay shirt back in 08, they also blatantly ripped off an Etsy designers work, featured a t-shirt for women that said “eat less” and most recently had a card with a “tranny” slur on in.

Why do you shop at this store? I imagine because you weren’t aware of these facts. Now you are, so stop shopping there."

I haven't done any fact-checking, personally, but it is enough to make me pause and think.  I was actually JUST looking at the APC collection on their website just now.  (Thanks, D!)

at the weekend - the ballet.

We enjoyed the matinee performance of Snow White at the Pacific NW Ballet.
It was a 1-hr narrative performance specially scheduled for little ones with short attention spans (myself included.)
You aren't supposed to take photos but I had to sneak just one.  It was a really lovely performance with lovely company.

new library books.

As long as I've waited for Diane Keatons's memoir, I've decided to start Eleanor Coppola's journal entries she wrote during the chaotic filming of Apocalypse Now.

at the weekend.

I had planned to do my "at the weekend" post on Fran and my trip to the ballet, but as lovely as that was, I'll postpone posting pics, as my heart is not in it.  Saturday, seconds before his first game of the season, Simon snapped his wrist.  It's broken and he's out of commission for 4-6 weeks.

Get well soon, Simon, the sweetest bird ever!
Chain of events:
He wanted to fit in a roller skating party before baseball on Saturday.  He danced so much, he fell.
Half-dressed for the game, we headed to Children's hospital.  You can see his left wrist is twice the size of the other wrist.  We were still optimistic.
But the news came back grim.  Don't use wrist for 4-6 weeks, keep icing it, no sports.  Seeing him blue is more than I can bare.  I'm headed to the store now to put together a care package.
Get well cards ...

major love at first sight.

( via )

Is this just the most wonderful dress? ... And then after falling in love with the dress, I fall in love with the no. 6 shoes.  So lo-fi, so everyday, it's not even for sale but I can list 27 places I'd wear it to.

around the interwebs this week ...

( 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 )

I need to start thinking about proper spring/summer clothes and outfits to bring to NC - see, it's warm there in May (as opposed to hail, wind and terrential rain like Seattle.)  My summer clothes currently consist of old cutoffs, some dresses and birks.   My "around the interweb" posts are totally geared toward the Seattle spring ... I need some summer inspiration.  Right now, the only thing on my wishlist is a good pair of army green trouser shorts and a new denim shirt.  Boring or Timeless?

I wish I could throw caution to the wind and splurge on thissteven alan
Though, these may serve the purpose just fine.  (How funny that this is summer to me!) - gap

when you grow up, your heart dies.

My home life is ... unsatisfying.

After a long evening of fussy Fran tantrums and me doing my best (aka telling JR "I'm just not equipped, I'm just a person!") - I looked over at Simon and he had his head in his hands.  It was clear, I immediately knew how we would spend our post-Francis evening:  watching The Breakfast Club

He loved it.  Am I going to win Mom of the Year?  Probably not.  But I know the right 80's movie for the right situation.  I hope that counts for something.

I joke that I finally got an iphone just to have the camera and instagram.  It's so much fun. The other thing I've fallen in love with is streaming radio while on my run.  This morning I got to listen to Eurythmics perform "Sweet Dreams" live on Pandora.  I was all tingly.

When Francis skips a nap, one of two things happens:  she either hits the wall with a major meltdown, spewing venom and hate, usually towards and at me OR she becomes quietly and intensly focused, for hours.  This past Sunday was [thankfully] the latter.  She started with her portrait of Rapunzel, one of her best (imo).  She then moved on to some sort of morris code, which she repeated for pages and then read each page to us, every 2-1-dash-1-6-1-0-0-dash-3-1- and I can still here her little voice, over and over.  There's something about this girl ...

it fits.

I finally had a few free moments to get to know the dress.  Until yesterday, I haven't been able to bring myself to try it on.  The result, thankfully:  No hemming necessary, I love the length and I love the color, and I love the length and the color with the Frye heels I've had for ages.  I'm so relieved.   I haven't felt my best lately;  I'm not in my tippest-toppest shape, but it's a very forgiving and feminine dress.  I am so glad I didn't go for a flirty party number - this is more me.  Major sigh of relief.  (I'm excited for the NC trip, but apprehensive about the wedding for many reasons not appropriate to go into ... a pretty outfit always lifts the spirit, no?)

st. paddy's evening.

... and because my life is workng in mysterious ways right now, they even ended their irish set with The Chauffer by Duran Duran.  Francis is on to something with this St. Patrick's Day holiday, me thinks.

my take on st. paddy's day.

All week Francis has looked at me and said "I can't WAIT for St. Patrick's Day!"  - Yikes.  I've never known what the heck the fuss is all about when it comes to March 17th.  We scrambled.  We came up with a surprise visit from a leprechaun and made green white chocolate chip cookies.  She seemed pleased.

and the rain came down ...

Listening to classic alternative on On Demand all day long (channel 917 in Seattle) - it's the best.

I have a feeling it will never stop raining.

around the interwebs this week ...

There's something about blues & greens with gold ... this set is $36.  If you're not going to treat yourself, then who is?  And while you are treating yourself, treat me, too.  ( here via here )

Super scorching hot, this one. I love a layered blazer.

The Japanese version of a little black dress.  Sigh.

A lovely portrait.

I really like the proximity of this table to the kitchen.  I think I'll start putting a folding table in my kitchen for big cooking projects with the kids.

Adore!  This could be tweaked this way and that - less 90's, more 90's, but always 90's when it's done well.

almost lipstick.

I've been a fan of Clinique's Almost Lipstick in Black Honey for years, so I'm excited that they have a bunch of new colors coming out this spring.  I like the colored shine, and also use it for layering.
I have to say, looking at them in person at Nordstrom the other night, I still love Black Honey the best.

more vintage photos.

Cleaning out a big box of photos last week, I came across more old photos of my grandparents, circa the late 30's.  Notice my grandmother is wearing the same shoes - at the top with loose shorts, and in the bottom 2 with a dressy suit.

of the comfy chic genre.

( via )
In the same vain as glorified sweats, I think these are fantastic.  I would wear them with a cropped black tshirt and ballet flats.  My whole outlook on how to dress everyday has changed now that I'm mostly at home.  I have to be unwrinkly but comfortable, and somewhat cute;  I would get depressed otherwise.

at the weekend.

Spring uniform ...

While I'm still about 6 months out on the waiting list for Diane Keaton's book, this one was only a week's wait ... nevermind, I'm a sucker for a memoir ...

J.R. prepares for pear soup ...

Fran and I have 1 tea party everyday.  We're using this old tattered china my dad gave me.  We talk of serious matters and silly things ...

Finally, we caught the mama bird coming out of the house, twice in 2 days.  She's been super busy gathering lots of nesting, we think her eggs are coming.
